Finally, A Garden

Family

To soothe our souls, and because we are tired of waiting for better areas closer to the doors of the house to be ready, we went to the garden center on US 441 near Webster yesterday and got a garden box, compost, manure, and plants – both vegetable and ornamental. This morning we planted our first North Carolina garden on up behind the house. We’ll be able to see it from our bedroom window and easily access it via the new stone steps.  Don’t know how much food we will get from it but it should be fun to eat squash, cukes, tomatoes, and peppers from our own little 4×4 plot.

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.

Imperial War Museum

Imperial War Museum

London’s Imperial War Museum in Southwark founded even as the First World War raged offers insights into the myriad costs of the wars of the 20th and 21st Centuries. It was a most disquieting but valuable reminder of the myriad costs of war.

London’s Canals

This stay in London has given us new opportunities to explore and learn more about how canals contributed to the growth of this great city and how they are being used and preserved today.
