Dakar, Senegal: A Wolof Village & The Pink Lake
Queen Mary 2’s arrival in the Port of Dakar, Senegal was heralded in the local press and greeted with ceremony. Our own excursion took us on a coach journey through the streets of the capital city to visit a Wolof village and the shore of Lake Retba, the salty lake famed for an intense pink color.

For our two day visit we opted to concentrate on African wildlife visiting the Aquila Private Game Reserve and the Boulders Beach Penguin Colony for a wonderful chance to these fabulous animals in their own habitat.
Durban: Zulu Culture Amid a Thousand Hills
The Zulu make up a large portion of the South African population and have a culture all their own. Today we traveled from the Port of Durban on the east coast of Africa to the Valley of a Thousand Hills to learn a bit about their traditional lifestyle.
Mauritius Delights: Vanilla, Rum, and Tea
The island nation of Mauritius was unfamiliar to us before we started planning this trip but today we got a wonderful introduction to this volcanic island that’s been peopled for less than 400 years. We drove past sugar cane fields and tea plantations, visited a vanilla farm, and savored a delicious Mauritian lunch while soaking up all sorts of information about the geology, history, and economy of this tiny country.
Two Adventures in Malaysia
A visit the the Hindu shrines in Batu Caves involving a climb of 272 steps into an immense limestone cavern and a pewtersmithing workshop at Royal Selangor the world’s largest producer of pewter ware were our two very different adventures near Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia made for an incredible day on our first visit to this Southeastern Asian country.
The Gardens of Singapore
Singapore is an city-state located on an island at the tip of the Malay Peninsula in Southeast Asia that during its sixty years of independence has carefully and thoughtfully created an ultra modern city that honors its past as it looks to the future. One aspect has been promoting a Garden City to in part to improve livability, public health. Our first visit to this spectacular city concentrated on the incredible gardens here.
Huê, the Imperial City of Vietnam
Knowing very little of the deep history of Vietnam, we chose to spend our one day in the country immersing ourselves in their 18th Century imperial history including a sumptuous nine-course lunch in the ancestral home of a princess.
