Cincinnati

Family

Friday we left home and drove I-40 to I-75 to Cincinnati in the rain and the fog. Stopped to pick up a cousin in Lexington then on to Aunt Mary’s. From there we went to the funeral home to pay tribute and say good-bye to Uncle Bob. Saturday after the funeral and graveside service we gathered with family at Cousin Peggy’s house. Then we stayed on in Cincinnati for a few days visiting with Aunt Nell and with Karen’s cousins, with Uncle Neil and Aunt Vi, and with Lynne, Danny, and Janet – newly rediscovered cousins of Steve’s. A bonus was the opportunity to celebrate Halloween in Mount Lookout on the streets where Karen once trick or treated as a tiny one. And of course we had to sample special foods, Zip Burgers, Mt Carmel Amber Ale (brewed by a distant cousin), Graeter’s Ice Cream, and homemade apple dumplings and pumpkin pie. The visit was a feast for body and soul.

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.

Imperial War Museum

Imperial War Museum

London’s Imperial War Museum in Southwark founded even as the First World War raged offers insights into the myriad costs of the wars of the 20th and 21st Centuries. It was a most disquieting but valuable reminder of the myriad costs of war.

London’s Canals

London’s Canals

The two of us have long been fascinated with the history of canals and their role in the history of transportation, industrialization, and more recently recreation. This stay in London has given us new opportunities to explore and learn more about how canals contributed to the growth of this great city and how they are being used and preserved today.
