On another ramble with a new tiny trailer a few years back we set the gps for Hot Springs VA but allowed ourselves to be sidetracked along the way by wonderful and delightful things. But this time we wanted to actually get there. We programmed the Maps App for neighboring Warm Springs and avoided the interstate. We were routed into West Virginia and actually drove part of the way along Sam Snead Parkway past The Greenbriar Resort. You have to look carefully to find Warm Springs, Virginia and in fact the Maps App wasn’t quite sure where it was. But we found Hot Springs and friendly people at the BB&T and the Chamber of Commerce. They helped us find a campsite Hidden Valley in the George Washington National Forest. So tonight we are camping off grid. We have our brand new 80W Zamp solar collector hooked up to the battery soaking up the last rays of sunshine. Tonight will be a test for the new refrigerator. In the meantime it is rather salubrious to just sit here among trees, near a meadow, and listen to the sounds of nature while spinning and reading.

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.

Imperial War Museum

Imperial War Museum

London’s Imperial War Museum in Southwark founded even as the First World War raged offers insights into the myriad costs of the wars of the 20th and 21st Centuries. It was a most disquieting but valuable reminder of the myriad costs of war.

London’s Canals

London’s Canals

The two of us have long been fascinated with the history of canals and their role in the history of transportation, industrialization, and more recently recreation. This stay in London has given us new opportunities to explore and learn more about how canals contributed to the growth of this great city and how they are being used and preserved today.
