What a delightful way to spend a summer’s Saturday evening. We went to the ballgame. We enjoyed delightful weather while watching the home team hosting the Stockton Ports from the general admission bleachers in right field. It was fun to be among young families, listening to parents teaching their children how to understand the great American game of baseball, watching antics of the mascot and the crazy extras like the tennis ball toss or the little kids on the field singing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.” Of course the ballpark treats like hotdogs and popcorn were great and because we were in the Southwest we got to savor that wonderful cinnamon laden fried treat, the churro! All of this topped off by the best fireworks display we’ve seen in years. By the way the home team did lose, but not without some incredible bottom of the ninth excitement. Yes, they were trailing by one point and the bases were loaded. Three balls, two strikes, two out, and…just like mighty Casey, he struck out.

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.

Imperial War Museum

Imperial War Museum

London’s Imperial War Museum in Southwark founded even as the First World War raged offers insights into the myriad costs of the wars of the 20th and 21st Centuries. It was a most disquieting but valuable reminder of the myriad costs of war.

London’s Canals

London’s Canals

The two of us have long been fascinated with the history of canals and their role in the history of transportation, industrialization, and more recently recreation. This stay in London has given us new opportunities to explore and learn more about how canals contributed to the growth of this great city and how they are being used and preserved today.
