Crossing Paths Again

2016 Out West, Road Trip, Washington

Cathy & Jay took delivery of their new black and silver clamshell T@B just before Tearstock in July. They were camped near us there at Atwood but we didn’t really get to know them until they and their dog Zoe stayed a few sites from us in Cottonwood campground at Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota early last month.  Then we saw them southbound as we were headed north on Highway 16 in South Dakota’s Black Hills. When we thought we saw them pass us on US-101 in Forks on Friday we sent them a text. The exchange of a few messages revealed that we both had reservations at the same campground on Sunday. So we made plans for a dinner together. We chose Downriggers on the waterfront in Port Angeles where we enjoyed the views, craft brews, local salmon, and wonderful conversation. We swapped tales of life in our respective T@Bs and of road trips past and present. We’ll stay in touch and look forward to the next time our paths cross!

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.

Imperial War Museum

Imperial War Museum

London’s Imperial War Museum in Southwark founded even as the First World War raged offers insights into the myriad costs of the wars of the 20th and 21st Centuries. It was a most disquieting but valuable reminder of the myriad costs of war.

London’s Canals

London’s Canals

The two of us have long been fascinated with the history of canals and their role in the history of transportation, industrialization, and more recently recreation. This stay in London has given us new opportunities to explore and learn more about how canals contributed to the growth of this great city and how they are being used and preserved today.
