Oak Creek Canyon has been on our radar since 1973. Mr. Carr at Owen Cotter Jewelers in downtown St Petersburg mentioned it as we were planning our honeymoon trip but today was our first visit here. We drove south from Flagstaff planning to enjoy the scenery on the way to Sedona. We didn’t get that far. We stopped at the West Fork Recreation area and hiked back through the ruins of Mayhews Lodge, the old orchard and along the trail that continually crosses Oak Creek. We made it to the sixth of thirteen possible stream crossings, stepping carefully from stone to stone. The canyon’s sheer red cliffs are breathtaking! Apparently this is the setting for Zane Grey’s novel, The Call of the Canyon. Guess we need to add that to our reading list!

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.

Imperial War Museum

Imperial War Museum

London’s Imperial War Museum in Southwark founded even as the First World War raged offers insights into the myriad costs of the wars of the 20th and 21st Centuries. It was a most disquieting but valuable reminder of the myriad costs of war.

This stay in London has given us new opportunities to explore and learn more about how canals contributed to the growth of this great city and how they are being used and preserved today.
