A Date with Riley

Family

This evening we got to enjoy the company Riley of Riley. We dined with her at Jasmine, one of her favorite local restaurants. We relied on her suggestions and the three of us shared the Sweet and Sour Chicken and the Jasmine Special Shrimp Fried Rice with Fried Cheesecake for dessert. We introduced her to geocaching as we found a cache in the restaurant parking lot. After her busy day of dance, she was game after dinner to head for home and play some games with us. Perhaps the most fun of the evening was a rousing game of War during which she was dubbed the Queen of Aces. After the dancing couple returned there were a few rounds of dominoes and a viewing of the latest episode of Tiny House Nation followed by some interesting discussion. Then a big group hug to tide us all over until tomorrow morning!

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.

Imperial War Museum

Imperial War Museum

London’s Imperial War Museum in Southwark founded even as the First World War raged offers insights into the myriad costs of the wars of the 20th and 21st Centuries. It was a most disquieting but valuable reminder of the myriad costs of war.

London’s Canals

London’s Canals

The two of us have long been fascinated with the history of canals and their role in the history of transportation, industrialization, and more recently recreation. This stay in London has given us new opportunities to explore and learn more about how canals contributed to the growth of this great city and how they are being used and preserved today.
