Reclaiming the Garden

Family

One problem with traveling all summer is that the garden at the house gets out of hand. Last fall we returned home after four months to find potted plants and weeds in the garden taller than ourselves. We have the “lawn” cut periodically during our absence but we have no one to pull weeds. This unplanned midsummer return to the house has a benefit. We’ve made an effort to reclaim the garden. There are still weeds in the driveway that will do nothing but grow out of control and we’re under no illusion that the garden won’t be chock full of weeds again this fall but for the moment the garden looks almost presentable!

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.

Imperial War Museum

Imperial War Museum

London’s Imperial War Museum in Southwark founded even as the First World War raged offers insights into the myriad costs of the wars of the 20th and 21st Centuries. It was a most disquieting but valuable reminder of the myriad costs of war.

This stay in London has given us new opportunities to explore and learn more about how canals contributed to the growth of this great city and how they are being used and preserved today.
