Besides being a trip back to the turn of the last century this was a trip deep underground. Actually we did not travel down but rather straight into the side of a mountain at The Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine in Ashland PA. Guided by the Mine Foreman, Brad, we learned a bit about anthracite mining a hundred years ago and experienced just a little of the environment in which the underground miners worked to extract the hard coal that fueled the Industrial Revolution. Although unfortunately for us the museum’s steam engine is in the repair shop and this trip we were unable to make the journey to the nearby anthracite strip mine we had a great visit to this private museum dedicated to preserving and interpreting this part of American History.
National Portrait Gallery
It was a most educational visit to the newly renovated National Portrait Gallery at Trafalgar Square in Central London. We were intrigued with the contemporary approach to presenting British History.
