After settling in at Newhalem Campground we hiked to the North Cascades Visitors Center where we learned we could attend a Ranger Talk. At 3:30PM we were the only two visitors sitting by the fireplace so Ranger Anthony Killion sat down with us and told the story of...

VKR Appreciation Weekend
If memory serves us correctly, it was September 2008 at the Badlands KOA that we purchased our Value Kard Rewards membership. It's served us well. We appreciate the 10% discount we get with every stay. There are other perks too, one is the VKR Appreciation Weekend...
Winthrop
The town of Winthrop, Washington, had it’s beginnings in the late 19th Century with the establishment of Guy Waring’s General Store. For many years the town’s economy depended on mining, ranching, and especially on apple growing. Then in the winter of 1968-69...
Trophy Treasure Trove
Roadside America alerted us to this bit of whimsy. Apparently the owner of Hank's Harvest Foods in Twisp, Washington is an accomplished, well traveled big game hunter who displays many of his trophies inside this well stocked full service grocery store that serves...
Chelan Lakeshore
One of the delights of our two night stay at Lake Chelan State Park Site #31 has been our proximity to the lakeshore. It has beckoned us out for morning and evening walks. The park offers some wonderful lakeside tent sites with gorgeous views and nice privacy...
Lake Chelan Historical Society
To give us a bit of perspective on where we are, we picked out the Lake Chelan Historical Society museum on Woodin Avenue in downtown Chelan. We were greeted by Carla whose Great Grandfather brought his family to Chelan in the late Nineteenth Century. His plan was to...
Rock Island Dam
Why do we find dams and hydroelectric power plants fascinating? Certainly it has nothing to do with one of us being a retired power generation engineer. The Rock Island Dam south of Wenatchee, Washington, his the distinction of being the first dam across the Columbia...
Ginkgo Trees of Stone
At some point more than ten million years ago here in what is now Washington State, the hills and valleys were lush with ginkgo, cypress, walnut, hickory, maple and many more kinds of trees when cataclysmic lava flows covered the landscape and turned into basalt....

After this morning's hike along the Bunch Grasses Trail out of Spring Canyon Campground near Grand Coulee, Washington, we're preparing to decamp from Site #18. It's been a great two night stay. We enjoyed some visits with neighbors as well as just some delicious...
Grand Coulee
See Park Video See History Video This afternoon we visited the Grand Coulee Dam Visitors Center. When we visited here ten years ago our focus was on the guided tour of the Third Power Plant. This time we watched the video documenting the process of construction of...

OUR VERY
LATEST
Alcatraz Island
Back in 1973 we promised ourselves we’d visit Alcatraz someday. This is the day. We toured the buildings, read the interpretive signs, listened to the audio commentary, and came away with a deeper understanding of what this place represents with hope mixed in with the grim and gritty.
Sausalito
Especially with a family member living here for more than a decade, we’ve made a few trips to the San Francisco Bay Area, but this delightful trip was our first experience in Sausalito and it was delightful.
A Meeting of the Queens
Our stop at Long Beach, California aboard Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 was a historic meeting of two iconic ocean liners. Queen Mary who served from 1936 to 1967 and her namesake, the only ocean liner still in service. We topped that off with a visit to the original Queen Mary, now a floating museum and hotel.
