Wilderness,Ellwood,& Spotsylvania

2009 Virginia, Civil War, Road Trip, States, Virginia

Thursday found us again listening to a CD and driving the Wilderness Battlefield Tour. Just after visiting the site of Grant’s headquarters we stopped and parked outside the gates of Ellwood where Gen Warren had his headquarters. The house is open for tours only on the weekend so we planned to just read the signs, visit the grounds, and move on. But while we were there we encountered Carolyn, a member of Friends of Wilderness Battlefield. She invited us to peek into the house. Well that turned into a full fledged individual tour of the house and lots of insights into the family that lived there through much of the 20th Century and donated the property to the National Park Service. After that wonderful encounter, the visit to the family cemetery where General Jackson’s arm is buried was almost anti-climatic. After finishing the Wilderness tour, we listened to and drove the Spotsylvania CD tour. It’s mind boggling how much Civil War activity occurred in this geographic area.

Bletchley Park

Bletchley Park

It was at Bletchley Park that the Allied Codebreakers deciphered German military messages during the Second World War. A free guided tour gave us a good overview of the campus and the activities that occurred here from 1938 to 1945.

Fenton House and Spaniards Inn

Fenton House and Spaniards Inn

A lovely way to spend a Sunday in Hampstead. We visited the historic Fenton House to view lots of lovely collectibles, to listen to and learn about harpsicords, and to tour and linger in the garden before heading off to the historic Spaniard’s Inn for a most delectable Sunday Roast.
