Who is at the beach at sunrise on Autumnal Equinox? Photographers, surfers, and – if you are on Assateague Island – wild horses! We arrived at Assateague Island National Seashore late yesterday without reservations so we were lucky to secure a site in the Bayside Campground. We don’t know if Oceanside would have had fewer mosquitoes. Even with the pesky insects it was fun to walk the campground and watch the wild horses help themselves to dog food and to wander up to a campfire. We were careful to give them plenty of space having been warned by rangers and by graphic signs that in fact these horses are really wild animals. Then this morning, just to celebrate Equinox, we were up before dawn and walked to the beach. It was beautifully quiet and peaceful. A great way to start the day.

For our first adventure together on the Emerald Isle, we walked the streets of Cobh, County Cork, explored St Colman’s Cathedral, and visited the Cobh Heritage Center.
