A Port in a Storm

Road Trip

Uncharacteristic of us we’ve stopped for a big breakfast at Cracker Barrel. The real reason is to let some of this stormy weather pass. We’ve taken our time with our meal and are now sitting on the porch listening to the song lyrics telling us truthfully that “The weather outside is frightful.” Indeed as we traveled south on I-65 we saw several cars in the median, evidence of spin outs. It’s soggy everywhere in the southeast. We drove through hard rain for six hours yesterday. And Tween Creeks experienced it too. Neighbors report the creek in front of the house jumped its banks and wreaked havoc with the road. Fun times both in the mountains and on the road!

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.

Imperial War Museum

Imperial War Museum

London’s Imperial War Museum in Southwark founded even as the First World War raged offers insights into the myriad costs of the wars of the 20th and 21st Centuries. It was a most disquieting but valuable reminder of the myriad costs of war.

London’s Canals

This stay in London has given us new opportunities to explore and learn more about how canals contributed to the growth of this great city and how they are being used and preserved today.
