It was a glorious drive along Washington State Highway 20, the North Cascades Scenic Highway. We left our campsite at Orondo to head north on US-97 then at Paternos we caught WA-153. It was at Twisp that we began traveling on WA-20.

We fueled up and gave a T@B tour in the Old West themed town of Winthrop.

And headed into the mountains! Awe inspiring views at every turn. Glaciers in the crags near the peaks!

Amazing sights. We had to pull over frequently to get out and take photos. We both kept trying to get the perfect photo of the T@B as part of the scenery!

Then we stopped at the Diablo Lake Overlook. It’s jaw-dropping incredible. Glacier sediment is responsible for that intense, luminous turquoise color. Soon thereafter we were ensconsed on Site #11 in the Newhalen Campground of North Cascades National Park.

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.

Imperial War Museum

Imperial War Museum

London’s Imperial War Museum in Southwark founded even as the First World War raged offers insights into the myriad costs of the wars of the 20th and 21st Centuries. It was a most disquieting but valuable reminder of the myriad costs of war.

London’s Canals

London’s Canals

The two of us have long been fascinated with the history of canals and their role in the history of transportation, industrialization, and more recently recreation. This stay in London has given us new opportunities to explore and learn more about how canals contributed to the growth of this great city and how they are being used and preserved today.
