Grandfather Country Store

North Carolina, Road Trip, States

Once before we darkened the door of Grandfather Country Store, an historic business on US 221 at Holloway Mountain Road just off the Blue Ridge Parkway near Blowing Rock NC. That time we were in search of ice but came away enriched by a delightful conversation with Bart Bare and with one of his books, Wadmawlaw: A Ghost Story. This time we stopped for coffee and came away enriched by a conversation with Sharon Blair Tolbert and with a copy of Bart’s SS Jew, which promises to be a compelling story based on actual historical events. Thank you, Bart and Sharon for keeping a bit of Blowing Rock history alive!

Bletchley Park

Bletchley Park

It was at Bletchley Park that the Allied Codebreakers deciphered German military messages during the Second World War. A free guided tour gave us a good overview of the campus and the activities that occurred here from 1938 to 1945.

Fenton House and Spaniards Inn

Fenton House and Spaniards Inn

A lovely way to spend a Sunday in Hampstead. We visited the historic Fenton House to view lots of lovely collectibles, to listen to and learn about harpsicords, and to tour and linger in the garden before heading off to the historic Spaniard’s Inn for a most delectable Sunday Roast.
