Yesterday we traveled only 242 miles but in a northerly direction and with a gain in altitude that took us back to early Spring. The deciduous trees are bare, this morning the temperature is in the thirties, and we see robins! We’re on Site A32, a meadow site in Julian Price Lake Campground on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Blowing Rock and Boone NC. We stayed here in June 2015 and near here last October. Yesterday we were surprised to learn that the usual Campground fees of $20 are half price in this pre-season (thus $5/night with our Senior Pass) but that there’s no fresh water and no flush toilets available. Our challenge for this stay is to conserve the bit of freshwater and of propane that we have with us to keep us hydrated, clean, and warm and to keep the battery charged using our Zamp solar panel. Meanwhile there’s fun places to revisit and new things to discover here!

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.

Imperial War Museum

Imperial War Museum

London’s Imperial War Museum in Southwark founded even as the First World War raged offers insights into the myriad costs of the wars of the 20th and 21st Centuries. It was a most disquieting but valuable reminder of the myriad costs of war.

London’s Canals

London’s Canals

The two of us have long been fascinated with the history of canals and their role in the history of transportation, industrialization, and more recently recreation. This stay in London has given us new opportunities to explore and learn more about how canals contributed to the growth of this great city and how they are being used and preserved today.
