In accordance with longstanding German tradition we eat Pork and Sauerkraut on New Year's Day in the hope that the upcoming year will bring goodness. The two of us are quite happy to see 2017 behind us. It's not that we didn't experience goodness in the year just past...

Stuffed Pork Chops
In recent weeks we have resurrected our menu planning card system. Together we plan a week's worth of dinner menus and make a shopping list. Most evenings we can be found in the kitchen combining our skills to whip up another tasty dinner. Tonight's Feast. Comfort...
The Greatest Generation
Any reference to The Greatest Generation has always brought Uncle Neil to our minds. He was raised during the Great Depression. He was drafted into the US Army nine months before Pearl Harbor. He fought for our freedoms from North Africa to Berlin. He celebrated VE...
Doyle Goes to School
It's been a fun weekend hanging out with Linus and his parents. We visited The Blarney Stone for lunch one day, walked to Ashmont Farmers Market another day. We noshed on fresh strawberries, homemade pumpkin pie, fresh baked bread and butter, and hot apple pie. We...
The Mountains Are Calling
This morning we gifted Linus with a hiking cup that bears the inscription "The Mountains are Calling". That prompted a plan to don some hiking shoes and take a city hike to a neighborhood playground. A pretend mountain had some awesome toy gears atop! Some retaining...
Solar Eclipse 2017
When your own house is in the path of totality for the first Solar Eclipse to travel across the country from coast to coast in ninety-nine years, the best place to travel to may be your own home. When we realized that, we tweaked our Summer Ramble plans so that we...
Cousins on the Mountain
Three of Steve's cousins have come to visit since our little mountain house is within the path of totality for todays Great American Solar Eclipse! After a delightful coffee klatch, and a home cooked breakfast, we hiked up the road and along a narrow catwalk to enjoy...
Reclaiming the Garden
One problem with traveling all summer is that the garden at the house gets out of hand. Last fall we returned home after four months to find potted plants and weeds in the garden taller than ourselves. We have the “lawn” cut periodically during our absence but we have...
Back on Home Turf
After an incredible week with family, siblings and their spouses, nieces and nephews, and our sons who flew in to be with us, we flew home yesterday. Time to catch up on sleep, mentally process all that has happened, grieve, heal, and most of all give thanks for all...
Bagpipe Salute
Years ago Karen’s Dad regularly marched with a Scottish Pipe and Drum Corps, playing the drum and twirling his mallets. He knew that his paternal ancestors were Canadian Irish but as he learned more about the Scottish Clans we wondered if perhaps his family might have...

Over the last several years we’ve had the distinct pleasure of many cross country journeys traveling though the Lower 48 in tents and our various teardrop campers as well as an amazing Alaska adventure that did not involve a camper.

OUR VERY
LATEST
National Portrait Gallery
It was a most educational visit to the newly renovated National Portrait Gallery at Trafalgar Square in Central London. We were intrigued with the contemporary approach to presenting British History.
Bletchley Park
It was at Bletchley Park that the Allied Codebreakers deciphered German military messages during the Second World War. A free guided tour gave us a good overview of the campus and the activities that occurred here from 1938 to 1945.
Fenton House and Spaniards Inn
A lovely way to spend a Sunday in Hampstead. We visited the historic Fenton House to view lots of lovely collectibles, to listen to and learn about harpsicords, and to tour and linger in the garden before heading off to the historic Spaniard’s Inn for a most delectable Sunday Roast.
