Three Copper Pennies

Family

Bill & Dovie came for a visit this weekend. We had a wonderful time catching up on one another’s lives. We shared some of the travel photos from their childhood that we have recently had scanned from slides to digital. That conjured up some fun memories! And Bill brought the three copper pennies that Great Grandpa Blanke had in his pocket when he arrived home in Cincinnati after the Civil War. Two were dated 1848 and the third was minted in 1852. They are significantly larger than modern pennies. It was awesome to hold items that had been held by so many members of four generations of family.

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.

Imperial War Museum

Imperial War Museum

London’s Imperial War Museum in Southwark founded even as the First World War raged offers insights into the myriad costs of the wars of the 20th and 21st Centuries. It was a most disquieting but valuable reminder of the myriad costs of war.

London’s Canals

This stay in London has given us new opportunities to explore and learn more about how canals contributed to the growth of this great city and how they are being used and preserved today.
