We’d heard about the Vermillion Cliffs when chatting with neighbors in North Carolina last year. Now we are within sight of them! The are composed of Navajo Sandstone laid down about 180 million years ago when this part of the world was at the bottom of a sea. The deep red color is due to the presence of large amounts of iron oxide mixed in with the calcium carbonate from the deposits of marine life.
