The Ambler Texaco

2016 Out West, Illinois, Road Trip

This morning we sprung for the Roadside America app hoping it would help us find some of the off the beaten path attractions. Then we set off in the direction of Moline but avoiding interstate travel. IL-17 and the new app lead us right to this gem. Through a series of owners this station served motorists traveling Route 66 from 1933 to 1999!  Restored to its 1930’s appearance when it was known as Ambler’s Texaco it’s a time machine. It harkens back to “You can trust your car to the man who wears a star” as you traveled the Mother Road on a Great American Adventure! Thanks, Roadside America!

Terri also referenced this App. I will make the $2.99 investment next time since I do take blacktop but often whiz past these interesting stops before knowing that they are ahead.

Turns out that the app purchase grants access to only one region and All Access is an additional $5.99 but as soon as we leave the Midwest we are definitely upgrading!

Bletchley Park

Bletchley Park

It was at Bletchley Park that the Allied Codebreakers deciphered German military messages during the Second World War. A free guided tour gave us a good overview of the campus and the activities that occurred here from 1938 to 1945.

Fenton House and Spaniards Inn

Fenton House and Spaniards Inn

A lovely way to spend a Sunday in Hampstead. We visited the historic Fenton House to view lots of lovely collectibles, to listen to and learn about harpsicords, and to tour and linger in the garden before heading off to the historic Spaniard’s Inn for a most delectable Sunday Roast.
