This Columbus Day weekend is the peak of the Leaf Peeper season here in the White Mountains. Lodgings and campgrounds tend to be filled to capacity by folks who made reservations months ago. We on the other hand opted to arrive yesterday without reservations and hope for the best. Choosing a national forest site that doesn’t accept reservations and closes for the season on noon on Columbus Day improved our chances and indeed we scored Site 17 in Wildwood Campground in the White Mountain National Forest and settled in to revel in the autumn foliage and do some exploring for a couple of days.
Off the beaten path is Hampstead is the more than three hundred year old Burgh House with a fascinating history. It’s now a community center, local museum, gallery, concert venue, event space, and more open to the public four days a week. We popped over for a bite to eat and to peruse the galleries to learn a little more about Hampstead history.
