Summer Camp for Adults

Road Trip

We’ve just spent the last few days on the South Carolina beaches on Hilton Head Island in the company of Phil & Jill. It was a glorious few days that felt a bit like summer even as the days are chilling off at home. We did beach walks, midday mudslides, lighthouse tours, brats, beer tastings, hot tub soaks, afternoon naps, evenings around the fire pits, dancing on the sidewalks, and all sort of fun things. There was enough planned events at the resort to prompt us to think of summer camp but since the beverages weren’t limited to kool aid we dubbed it Summer Camp for Adults. It was a glorious time and we’ve promised to reconvene and have more fun adventures together – SCA-II, SCA-III, etc.

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.

Imperial War Museum

Imperial War Museum

London’s Imperial War Museum in Southwark founded even as the First World War raged offers insights into the myriad costs of the wars of the 20th and 21st Centuries. It was a most disquieting but valuable reminder of the myriad costs of war.

London’s Canals

This stay in London has given us new opportunities to explore and learn more about how canals contributed to the growth of this great city and how they are being used and preserved today.
