There are many cool things to do in Porcupine Mountain State Wilderness Park but the road to many of them is closed today. Nonetheless we were able to check out the visitors center for an overview and a bit of history. This place might have been a national park but for World Wat II. The federal government didn’t have the funds and the state government wanted to protect the resources of this wilderness from being harvested for the war effort. Then we drove to the Lake of the Clouds. Wow! This beautiful lake is nestled in a high valley  and surrounded by old growth forests. We looked down on it from the escarpment and watched a canoe make its way across the surface of the lake. And we hiked a little way along the Big Carp River Trail for access to a few more vantage points. Gorgeous!

On the way home we stopped at the entrance to the abandoned Carp Lake Copper Mine which is now protected ad a bat habitat. Cool!

Bletchley Park

Bletchley Park

It was at Bletchley Park that the Allied Codebreakers deciphered German military messages during the Second World War. A free guided tour gave us a good overview of the campus and the activities that occurred here from 1938 to 1945.

Fenton House and Spaniards Inn

Fenton House and Spaniards Inn

A lovely way to spend a Sunday in Hampstead. We visited the historic Fenton House to view lots of lovely collectibles, to listen to and learn about harpsicords, and to tour and linger in the garden before heading off to the historic Spaniard’s Inn for a most delectable Sunday Roast.
