Keeper of the Plains

2019 West Again, Kansas, Road Trip, States

What a welcome to Wichita! The fact that we’ve got someone dear to us working in Wichita this summer influenced our route this trip and luck had us arriving at a fortuitous time, Emily has some time off from work to hang out with us this afternoon and tomorrow! After getting ourselves settled into Air Capital RV Park and taking a quick nap, we met up with Emily for some comfort food at Jimmie’s Diner which is a Wichita institution tied in with some interesting American entrepreneurial history. There we enjoyed lively conversation about her latest costume shop endeavors, her family, and life in general since our last good visit with her last year. After dinner we repaired to her delightful apartment for more conversation about costuming, fashion history, and her portfolio before heading downtown to stand on a walking bridge at the confluence of the Arkansas and Little Arkansas Rivers just before sunset to watch the lighting of the Ring of Fire at Keeper of the Plains Plaza, an inspirational experience that is one of the top things to do in Wichita!

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.

Imperial War Museum

Imperial War Museum

London’s Imperial War Museum in Southwark founded even as the First World War raged offers insights into the myriad costs of the wars of the 20th and 21st Centuries. It was a most disquieting but valuable reminder of the myriad costs of war.

London’s Canals

London’s Canals

The two of us have long been fascinated with the history of canals and their role in the history of transportation, industrialization, and more recently recreation. This stay in London has given us new opportunities to explore and learn more about how canals contributed to the growth of this great city and how they are being used and preserved today.
