First order of business this morning was to get the auto air-conditioning repaired. The problem had been diagnosed in Great Falls but since they didn’t have the part they arranged for the Spokane dealer to order it for us. Then we got a haircut for Steve, got tea and fritters at at Starbucks, and wandered around a wonderful local park, Manito Park, for hours. After lunch we went to the UPS store to pick up our mail only to discover we were at the wrong location! Found the right one, got connected with our mail and took care of a few more little details. This evening we had a wonderful dinner with Chris, formerly of Jacksonville and Tampa, now a brand new resident of Spokane and friend of Greg and of CJ. We enjoyed food and brew and great conversation at O’Doherty’s Irish Pub then continued the conversation as we explored the Spokane River Falls and the Riverfront Park. We were expounding on the delightful mix of urban environment and small town feeling when someone drove by in a convertible with top down and the Mayberry theme playing on the sound system. It just seemed to capture the spirit perfectly!

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.

Imperial War Museum

Imperial War Museum

London’s Imperial War Museum in Southwark founded even as the First World War raged offers insights into the myriad costs of the wars of the 20th and 21st Centuries. It was a most disquieting but valuable reminder of the myriad costs of war.

London’s Canals

London’s Canals

The two of us have long been fascinated with the history of canals and their role in the history of transportation, industrialization, and more recently recreation. This stay in London has given us new opportunities to explore and learn more about how canals contributed to the growth of this great city and how they are being used and preserved today.
